Education in the UAE has grown since the founding of the Federation when only a small minority of urban residents have access to formal education. Currently, the United Arab Emirates offers a comprehensive education for all students and students from kindergarten to university, with education provided to citizens free of charge at all levels. There is also an extensive private education sector, while several thousand students, both men and women, pursuing higher education programs overseas at a cost of Government.


In 1989, the UN estimates that the literacy rate in the UAE is around 53.5%. In 2000 the literacy rate is estimated to have reached 79%.

Although the UAE has achieved much in the field of education, there is a real awareness that constant updating of policy and sustained investment in infrastructure needed to ensure that graduates are completely equipped to enter the workforce and assist in the development of the country. For this purpose, the Ministry of Education has produced a policy document outlining a strategy for further educational development in the UAE until the year 2020 based on five-year phased plan.

BASIC AND SECONDARY EDUCATION

Education at primary and secondary level is universal and compulsory until ninth grade. This happens in the process of four layers above 14 years: 4 to 5 year-olds attend kindergarten, 6 to 11 years attending primary schools, the preparation phase serves for children aged between 12 and 14 years, and 15 to 17 years attending school medium. Emiratisation teaching staff in government schools is scheduled to reach 90 percent by 2020, in order to ensure that the principles of Islam and the traditions of the UAE maintained.

More than 40 percent of students attend private schools. Some offer foreign language education is directed to expatriate communities, which usually preserve the culture and follow the student from the state curriculum.

Primary school education is compulsory for all UAE citizens. Government policy is to provide the student staff ratio / at 1:20 at kindergarten and primary levels, and 1:15 at secondary level and secondary schools.

Curriculum in the Education System in UAE

Basic education curriculum emphasizes basic literacy and numeracy skills, and includes basic instruction in language, mathematics, and science.

Secondary cycle focuses on preparing students at the University, technical or training calls, or to join the workforce directly. Most of the students in the UAE tend to pursue higher education at universities rather than in technical or vocational institute.

IT education in the formative years has been a top priority for the UAE confirmed by the success of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid IT Education Project for (ITEP), which was launched in 2000. In addition to installing computer laboratories in all participating schools, and creating a comprehensive advanced curriculum, ITEP also provides educational resources online invaluable in www.itep.ae. ITEP now provides courses in 40 high schools in the UAE (20 in Dubai, 20 in Abu Dhabi) and over 13,000 students pass through this program each year. ITEP student trainee has reached 97 per cent success rate in courses in the academic year 2005/06.

Secondary Education in the Education System in UAE

Secondary education lasts for three years. It consists of a common first year followed by a specialization in Science or Arts. At the end of the twelfth year, students take the exam for al-shahada Thanawiya Al-Amma (Secondary School Leaving Certificate). Technical secondary education offers preparatory and secondary cycles. Engineering courses offer preparation cycle mastery of basic skills that lead to the Intermediate Certificate. At the end of the secondary cycle, Secondary Technical Diploma awarded.

Higher education in the Education System in UAE

United Arab Emirates has established a very good system and a variety of higher education in a very short time. Citizens can attend government institutions free of charge, and various private organizations, many with international accreditation, supplement the public sector. The country now has one of the highest application participation rates in the world. UAE education system consists of various educational institutions - Schools, Colleges and Universities. In addition, there are few training institutions that offer professional qualifications and training in various fields. There are several universities and colleges in the UAE government in which the entry is restricted to citizens only. However, there are some private institutions in which participation is open to students who meet admission requirements.

A student can enroll in the program of his choice. The program may be different from the academic degree programs, technical, and professional in various disciplines, preparing students for careers in research and professional practice in all areas.

UAE education system consists of a variety of academic and professional training institutions. Academic programs include diploma, a degree is also a graduate study. A student can also enroll for professional training to obtain internationally recognized certificates.

Registration

Once you identify the program that interests you, you must apply for admission. Important first step in the process is to ensure that the institutions at the top of the list you are willing to accept you. Institutions will need to review your academic background to determine whether you will succeed in its program.

Every institution in the UAE alone set the standard entrance. Some of the common practice for many institutions, however, undergraduate and graduate admission to the university can vary from one institution to another as well as from one course to another. Admission to the professional training program may not require specific background knowledge. It is advisable to check with the institution prior to admission.

Student Visa to study in UAE

To enroll in elementary school, middle or high, a residence visa is required. However, student visas are provided by all colleges and universities and also some training institutions.

Each institution may have its own deadline to submit an application for admission. Some institutions may require all admission procedures and fees to pay before the visa issuance procedure can begin. Visa issuance procedure usually takes 10-30 days.

Administrative costs for a student visa is 1500Dhs valid for 3 years. This amount is usually paid at the time of registration. However, some agencies may include administrative costs is their tuition.
