The events leading to the Cinco de Mayo. Cinco de Mayo has its roots in the French occupation of Mexico. French occupation took place in post-war America of Mexico 1846-1848, Mexico 1858 Civil War, and the 1860 Reform Wars. This war left the Treasury of Mexico in damage and nearly bankrupt. On July 17, 1861, Mexican President Benito Juarez issued a moratorium in which all foreign debt payments would be delayed for two years, with the promise that after this period, payments will be returned. In response, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and attractive, but the French, at the time ruled by Napoleon III, decided to use the opportunity to set up a Latin empire in Mexico that will support the interests of France, the Second Mexican Empire.

The end of 1861, an armed French fleet stormed Veracruz well, landing a large French force and driving President Juarez and his government became retreat. The victory of Mexico, however, was short-lived. Thirty thousand troops and a full year later, France is able to overthrow the Mexican army, capture Mexico City, and set the Emperor Maximilian I as ruler Meksiko.Namun, France victory are also short, lasting only 3 years, from 1864 to 1867. With the U.S. Civil War in 1865, the U.S. is able to provide more assistance to Mexico to expel the French, after Maximilian I is executed by Mexico, along with his Mexican generals Miramón and Mejia, in the Cerro de las Campanas, Queretaro.
